Shortline Conference
Learn about how essential shortlines are to the Canadian economy by attending this not-to-be-missed event. Shortline railways are, on average, 3-4 times more fuel efficient than trucks and one unit-train of goods can remove upwards of 300 trucks from our congested roads. Not to mention that our members are also looking at renewable fuel sources to make this industry even more sustainable and environmentally friendly. Shortline railways also perform a vital role in the rail-based supply chain, providing crucial first-mile, last-mile service that connects customers and rural economies to the world. In fact, approximately 20 per cent of carloads in Canada originate on a shortline railway.
August 23-24, 2022 – Edmonton
General info: The RAC will host a shortline event in the Edmonton area from August 23-24. On August 23, the RAC will hold a welcome reception for those who arrive that day at the host hotel. The following day from 9:00 – 13:00 we will hold a shortline conference where we invite speakers to share their SL story with the group. At 13:00, those who wish to attend the Cando tour at Sturgeon Rail Terminals (22131, Vista Rd, AB), will travel to the terminal for a walking tour of the facility, followed by a locomotive tour.
The Hon. Minister Omar Alghabra has been invited to address attendees on August 24th.
Keynote Speaker: Graham Sherman
The day will start with an inspiring keynote by Graham Sherman. In 2013, Sherman launched the Tool Shed Brewing Company. What was originally a hobby in his backyard tool shed is now a 22,000 square foot brewery with product sold in over 1000 locations. While you may be wondering how beer & shortlines are related, as he recounts his bumpy entrepreneurial journey, and addresses how to harness disruption and embrace a collaborative working model, you will recognize the resourceful & resilient nature of shortlines.
This keynote will be followed by two interactives sessions – one focusing on funding & financing and the other will be a Shortline Showcase where 4 shortlines will have an opportunity to share case studies with the attendees.
