The City of Montreal has become the first major urban area in Canada to adopt the Guidelines for New Development in Proximity to Railway Operations into its long-term development plan. The guidelines – developed by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) and Railway Association of Canada (RAC) as part of their joint Proximity Initiative – address railway-community issues concerning noise, vibration, and safety.

Efficient, low-cost transportation services like commuter rail have a big impact on the full costs of home location options, according to new research from RBC and the Pembina Institute.

The Railway Association of Canada (RAC) is pleased to announce the publication of the 2014 edition of Rail Trends, the association’s annual report on the performance of Canada’s railway industry.
Rail Trends contains a rolling 10-year review of statistics, reflecting multiple aspects of railway performance: from safety and fuel efficiency, to infrastructure investment and productivity.

Despite challenges associated with increased fuel consumption among Class I freight railways, rising traffic and volumes, and adjustments to the commodities moved by the railway industry, RAC members are well-positioned to reach their emission-reduction goals.

Advocates for some of Canada’s large resource and transportation sectors today sent a letter to Canada’s Commissioner of Lobbying, Karen E. Shepherd, regarding proposed amendments to the Lobbyists’ Code of Conduct.

The Railway Association of Canada (RAC) today recognized four of its members for their outstanding contributions to rail safety. Representatives from CN, CP, VIA Rail, and The Roberval and Saguenay Railway Company accepted their awards at the association’s Rail Day event in Ottawa. The annual RAC Safety Awards encourage Canada’s railway industry to adopt safe practices and to promote awareness of rail safety, to ensure that their networks remain among the safest in the world.

While federally-regulated railway companies are mandated to have safety management systems (SMS) in place, in its latest Watchlist, the TSB called on Transport Canada (TC) to require all modes of transportation to adopt a formalized process for proactively identifying and reducing risk. Canada’s railway industry supports measures to improve safety across the transportation sector, and it is working collaboratively with TC to revise SMS regulations, and to better understand, adopt and maintain safety culture.

The Canadian Railway Hall of Fame (CRHF) is currently accepting nominations to recognize individuals, communities and technologies that have been instrumental in building Canada’s freight and passenger railway infrastructure.

The Railway Association of Canada (RAC) supports new rail safety measures announced today by Transport Minister Lisa Raitt in response to the Transportation Safety Board (TSB) report into the tragic accident in Lac-Mégantic, Que. RAC worked collaboratively with Transport Canada in addressing the TSB recommendations and its members will comply fully with all new rules.
