Open-Top Railcar Loading

The RAC’s Mechanical Services Team offers training courses to shippers and railways on how to safely load open-top and closed railcars. These training sessions cover industry best practices, and help to ensure that Open Top Loading Rules and regulations are consistently applied. In addition to hands-on training, manuals and audio-visual materials help to ensure participants understand how to properly adhere to the rules.

Topics covered include:

  • Weight and load distribution on rail cars
  • Calculating load restraint
  • Materials for load support and securement
  • Load-measuring procedures
  • Calculating combined center of gravity
  • Overhanging loads
  • Impact testing for new load configurations
