Subj: Comments on Federal Labour Relations Modernization
Dear Labour Program Officials,
Thank you for the opportunity to participate in the Building Canada Strong – Powered by Canada’s Workers consultations.
As someone involved in Canada’s agriculture sector, I support the Government’s efforts to modernize the federal labour relations framework. A modern framework should continue to protect collective bargaining while recognizing the importance of resilient supply chains and the nationally significant industries that Canadians rely on every day.
Agriculture depends on reliable rail service to move grain, fertilizer, feed and other essential products to domestic and international markets. When rail service is disrupted, the impacts extend well beyond the rail sector, affecting farmers, processors, exporters, ports and Canada’s reputation as a reliable trading partner.
As the Government considers changes to the Canada Labour Code, I encourage measures that:
- strengthen early dialogue, mediation and dispute resolution;
- reduce the risk of prolonged work stoppages;
- recognize the national economic importance of federally regulated transportation sectors; and
- improve supply chain resilience while respecting collective bargaining rights.
Modernizing the Canada Labour Code is an opportunity to build a labour relations framework that works for workers, employers and the broader Canadian economy. Any reforms should recognize the significant economic and supply chain impacts that disruptions in nationally important transportation sectors can have across Canada.
