The Railways’ Commitment
  1. Remain the best rail service providers in the world for Canada's industries and regions through competitive, market-driven solutions.
  2. Be the safest and most reliable mode of transportation for people and products.
  3. Stimulate Canada's competitiveness through productivity growth by making significant investments in transportation infrastructure.
  4. Provide superior, reliable, and cost-effective service to Canada's intercity passengers and urban commuters.
  5. Be the most energy-efficient surface mode of transportation, reduce highway congestion and optimize land use for future transportation needs.

Canadian railways are...

  • essential to the competitiveness of Canadian goods.
  • As an extension of Canada's manufacturing and natural resource sectors, Canadian railways contribute $10 billion annually to the economy, providing an effective and competitive delivery system for domestic, import, and export goods. Key strategic investments by the major Canadian railways have built an infrastructure which gives north/south and east/west continental traffic access to lucrative global markets.

Canadian railways are...

  • a major employer.
  • The railway industry employs over 35,000 people directly, another 60,000 indirectly with suppliers, from coast to coast. The rail sector is largely national in scope and remains one of Canada's most significant employers. Many rail employees work for locally operated and managed regional short line railways, often providing significant employment in rural centres throughout the country.

Canadian railways are...

  • environmentally friendly.
  • Rail has a significant environmental advantage over other surface modes of transportation when comparing greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). Despite carrying 65% of the nation’s surface tonne-kilometres of freight, rail produces only 3% of transportation GHG emissions; rail moves one tonne of freight 168 kilometres on just one litre of fuel. Rail provides an environmentally responsible alternative to the pervasive and rapidly increasing problems of pollution, highway overcrowding, land use, and massive highway infrastructure costs.
