What if there were no train whistles? How do we stop people from walking on railway tracks? These are just two of the questions that will be explored at this year’s “Direction 2006/British Columbia Safe Community Event”. This week, Direction 2006 along with Transport Canada officials and over 80 key municipal and railway officials will meet to exchange perspectives on railway safety in the Lower Mainland. This second annual safety event is sponsored by "Direction 2006", Transport Canada, and the West Coast Express.
"Direction 2006" is a partnership between all levels of government, railway companies, public safety organizations, police, unions and community groups. Its objective is to reduce crossing collisions and trespassing incidents by 50 per cent by the year 2006.
Every year in Canada approximately 370 collisions and trespassing incidents occur at highway/railway crossings and along the railway tracks resulting in the death or serious injury of nearly 170 people. Transport Canada and the Railway Association of Canada also work together on "Operation Lifesaver," a public education program which, since 1981, has helped reduce crossing collisions by 60 per cent
To reach its target, "Direction 2006" has identified several key work areas: education, enforcement, research, legislative framework, resources, communications, and outreach.
Indeed, all Canadians can help improve our national safety record. Motorists and pedestrians alike can take action. Even crossing locations equipped with warning devices — such as bells and gates — demand alert, prudent driving and caution.
All media are invited to attend.
