Tax Cut Fact Sheet
The business tax measures introduced by the B.C. government on July 30th in their mini-budget includes some elements that will indirectly benefit the rail industry. In particular, the cut in corporate capital taxes on non-financial institutions should leverage new investment in capital equipment. Secondly, the decision to eliminate the seven percent tax on bunker fuel, used to run large ships, should benefit the Port of Vancouver, and by implication, the rail network which services the port.

A Transportation Blueprint for the Next Decade and Beyond
A Transportation Blueprint for the Next Decade and Beyond

Speaking at the Vancouver Board of Trade on April 11, 2001, Transport Minister David Collenette elaborated his vision for a 'Transportation Blueprint for the Next Decade and Beyond' . In particular, the section "Developing the Blueprint" on page 6 outlines the government's strategy to address the concerns of stakeholders. There are numerous references within his text that appear to have been drawn from the WESTAC presentation made by President, William Rowat on April 10, 2001. The RAC provided a copy of Mr. Rowat's presentation to Minister Collenette in advance of the WESTAC meeting. Coinciding with the two presentations was the release from the Railway Association of Canada of the well-received Background Research Paper entitled "Developing a Continental Transportation Policy for Canada's Future". RAC is excited to be an influential player in the formulation of the vision for transportation policy in Canada and to find our work embedded in government speeches. All our hard work is paying off!
