On December 24, 2012 the Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities approved the new Railway Freight Car Inspection and Safety Rule, submitted by the RAC on behalf of the industry. The new rule will now be better linked to other rule changes which have taken place over the past few years. This new rule will also facilitate the introduction and use of new and improved technologies for safe railway operations.

The new rule was approved on December 24, 2012, but will not take effect until February 22, 2013; this will allow industry time to train all of their effected employees.
